    Deedy’s children’s book is about a cockroach, Martina, who is on a quest to find a husband.  She             searches and finds several suitors who are not right for her, only interested in what she can do for             them and how beautiful she is.  After getting ready to give up, her grandmother gives her a                         wonderful piece of advice, that she should be herself, and the right mate would come along.                      Taking this advice, Martina becomes hopeful in finding the perfect person for her husband.

            Martina the Beautiful Cockroach is a cute, easy read with beautiful illustrations. It is a Cuban                     folktale, with an important theme that listening to the wisdom of our elders is important, as                         Martina’s Abuela gives her the advice to “be herself” in the novel when meeting someone she                     likes.
